Traditional methods of large-scale student assessment (such as PEC exams) are expensive, complex and ad hoc. In 2015, the Department of School Education and PITB introduced a low-cost, tablet-based student diagnostic application to be used by school monitoring officers during monthly visits to each public school. The Assessment application is connected to a wide bank of questions, and each question is marked with the student’s relevant study results.

Key Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for English, Mathematics and Urdu are currently being assessed for Grade 3 students. Key areas assessed include comprehension, sentence completion, two and three digit addition and subtraction, division and multiplication.
Evaluation process
Examining Officers (MEAs) are instructed to randomly select 7 students in class 3 and give them a test on their tablet. Based on a central question bank, the MEA tablet Android app randomly selects diagnostic questions for specific grades, articles and key SLOs. These multiple choice questions are presented to the student being tested. A total of seven questions are asked in each assessment test in more than 47,000 government schools across Punjab.

This process usually takes less than 5 minutes per student. Approximately 329,000 students are reviewed monthly.

MEA has conducted about 6.7 million reviews so far.

Benefits and effects

This platform allows students to study cheaply and frequently.
The presence of teachers and the education of pupils in the classroom has a positive effect.
This approach has helped in basic and comparative learning levels between government schools and low-cost private schools in Punjab.

Teachers and school administrators have realized that consistently low SLO scores are highlighted in school reform meetings, so they are taking steps to provide a better education.
This diagnostic platform can be extended to any level.

Through this website, the Punjab Government has now made the monthly assessment results of each district and tehsil available online for free based on the school level assessment results submitted every month.
